Accelerated Degradation Experiment
Conditions
Procedure A: |
30 days exposure at 50 °C and 100% relative humidity. |
Procedure B: |
30 days exposure at 50 °C and 100% relative humidity followed by 4 days at 70 °C and 100% relative humidity. |
Appearance of the substance
The substance, originally in the form of pale blue green prisms or a pale green, crystalline powder, efflorescent in air, changes after a few days into a yellow-chestnut coloured suspension.
Gain of moisture
After procedure A: |
50% |
After procedure B: |
60% |
Colorimetric determination
Determination of the ferric ion.
After procedures A and B: the quantity of oxidized product increases with time, it reaches 70%.
Conclusion
Ferrous sulfate is subject to decomposition under accelerated degradation conditions.
