Global malaria control and elimination: report of a meeting on containment of artemisinin tolerance
Early signs of artemisinins becoming less effective againt P.falciparum malaria are now evident at the Thai-Cambodian border. This report presents the outline of a containment plan to avert potentially grave consequences of artemisinin-tolerant parasites from spreading further, as which happened with chloroquine and
sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine.

LONG-LASTING INSECTICIDAL NETS FOR MALARIA PREVENTION
This trial edition manual is designed as a practical guide on malaria prevention through the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), particularly long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and is intended for national malaria control programmes (NMCPs) that have opted to use LLINs to protect some or all populations at risk.

The presence of oral artemisinin monotherapies in the market continues to pose a threat to the useful therapeutic life of these medicines, by encouraging the development of resistance. In August 2007, WHO convened an informal consultation with the manufacturers of artemisinin-based pharmaceutical products and proposed a new code for artemisinin marketing practices which was accepted by all participating companies.

Assessment of the Safety of Artemisinin Compounds in Pregnancy
In 2006 WHO/GMP and TDR convened joint informal consultations to review existing data and policies on the use of artemisinin compounds in pregnancy. At the first consultation experts in reproductive and developmental toxicity discussed new published and unpublished data on the toxicity of artemisinins in rodents and primates. In addition, studies using whole embryo culture as well as isolated cells were reviewed. A second consultation reviewed the recent safety and efficacy data on the use of artemisinin compounds in early pregnancy and outlined new approaches needed to obtain more safety information. |
