Abstract

A critical, detailed review of all available data useful in assessing the potential hazards to health posed by the presence of selected veterinary drug residues in foods consumed by humans. Toxicological data are collected and assessed in order to establish acceptable daily intakes for each of the drugs under review. Evaluations draw upon extensive data submitted to WHO by drug manufacturers as well as findings from the published literature. Separate monographs are presented for three anthelminthic drugs (closantel, ivermectin, and levamisole), two antimicrobial agents (benzylpenicillin and oxytetracycline), and two growth promoters (carbadox and olaquindox). Each monograph opens with a brief description of the drug, its properties, formulations, and veterinary applications. The most extensive section evaluates evidence of toxicity from studies of acute toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and effects on reproduction and development

Abstract

A state-of-the-art report on the latest advances in methods for evaluating the toxicological and chemical characteristics of food additives and testing their safety. Prepared by a 54-member task group, the book emphasizes methodological advances that have either confirmed the value of established principles for safety assessment or permitted the development of new procedures offering greater sensitivity and predictive value. The objective is to set out basic principles for conducting toxicological studies and preparing specifications for identity and purity that can be applied in a broad range of situations. The book, which expertly interprets and synthesizes advances from several different disciplines, will serve as a useful reference for toxicologists interested in applying the most sensitive and accurate principles for safety assessment

Abstract

A critical, detailed review of all available data useful in assessing the potential hazards to health posed by the presence of selected veterinary drug residues in foods consumed by humans. Separate monographs are presented for one b-adrenoceptor-blocking agent (carazolol), three anthelminthic agents (febantel, fenbendazole, and oxfendazole), two antimicrobial agents (spiramycin and tylosin), and three tranquillizing agents (azaperone, chlorpromazine, and propionylpromazine). Evaluations draw upon many unpublished proprietary reports voluntarily submitted by drug manufacturers as well as findings from the published literature. For tylosin, aza-perone, chlorpromazine, and propionylpromazine, no acceptable daily intakes could be established due to insufficiencies in available toxicological data. The experts further recommended that chlorpromazine should not be used in food-producing animals
