World Health Organization. Regional Office for Europe ( 1997 )
Abstract

Recognizing the urgent need for a response by the international community to the alarming rise in sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in the countries of eastern Europe and central Asia, the Regional Office and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) organized a meeting of representatives of international and bilateral organizations. The aim of the meeting was to develop and strengthen concerted international efforts in supporting capacity-building in the secondary prevention of STD in the affected countries, which would complement efforts made in the primary prevention of STD and HIV infection. The participants exchanged information on the current STD situation and on the activities of the organizations represented, identified current needs and gaps in international assistance, and developed a joint strategic approach. They agreed to prepare for the establishment of a task force for urgent response to the STD epidemics in eastern Europe, and designated the WHO Regional Office for Europe as focal point for the task force

World Health Organization. Regional Office for Europe ( 1997 )
Abstract

The supply and quality of drinking-water have high priority as environment and health concerns in Armenia, where outbreaks of waterborne disease have occurred in recent years. To follow up a 1996 WHO workshop, the Ministry of Health of Armenia, with support from WHO and Italian Cooperation, organized a national interministerial consensus meeting. The participants comprised 53 representatives of the ministries for health, the economy, ecology, finance, agriculture and urban construction and of local government, and two WHO staff. The participants unanimously adopted a resolution with recommendations calling for the development of a financial and legislative basis for the sustainable management of water supplies, the revision of relevant legislation, the creation of multisectoral coordination mechanisms, the development of a master plan for water management, and a pilot project to assist in these tasks. In the resolution, the participants affirmed their intention, as representatives of the appropriate national agencies, to take immediate action to address these issues
