Description: This publication is an update of the review of current knowledge on HIV transmission through breastfeeding, with a focus on information made available between 2001 and 2007. It reviews scientific evidence on the risk of HIV transmission through breastfeeding, the impact of different feeding options on child health outcomes, and conceivable strategies to reduce HIV transmission through breastfeeding with an emphasis on the developing world. The publication provides the evidence base and rationale for two additional documents in the revised HIV and infant feeding series; HIV and Infant Feeding. Guidelines for decision-makers (ISBN 92 4 159122 6) and HIV and Infant Feeding. A guide for health-care managers and supervisors (ISBN 92 4 159123 4). The French and Spanish versions (2004) have not been updated. We anticipate further revision of the English version (2007) and subsequent translation into French and Spanish
