|Abstract:||Evaluates the risks to human health and the environment posed by exposure to allethrin, d-allethrin, bioallethrin, and s-bioallethrin. These synthetic pyrethroid pesticides are used mainly for the control of flies and mosquitos in the home, flying and crawling insects on farm animals, and fleas and ticks on dogs and cats. Common formulations include aerosols and sprays, dusts and powders, smoke coils, and electric mats. Because these allethrins are most commonly used indoors, data concerning effects on the environment are scarce. The most extensive section reviews the design and findings of experimental studies, with results given separately for allethrin, d-allethrin, bioallethrin, and s-bioallethrin in terms of eye irritation, skin irritation, and sensitization. Data on carcinogenicity, reproductive effects, embryotoxicity, and teratogenicity are also critically reviewed, leading to the conclusion that short-term toxicities are low and that no mutagenic, carcinogenic, embryotoxic or teratogenic effects have been observed. Though allethrins have been widely produced and used since 1952, no toxic effects on human beings have been reported. Because these allethrins are most commonly used indoors, and since these compounds are rapidly decomposed by sunlight, the report concludes that the use of allethrins is unlikely to pose an environmental hazard, except in the case of spillage or misuse. Under recommended conditions of use, the exposure of the general population is judged negligible.
