Abstract
Provides concise definitions for some 700 terms used in the diagnosis and classification of mental disorders. Now in its second edition, the lexicon has been revised and expanded to meet the practical need, in clinical work, teaching, and research, for an explicit and authoritative lexis of terms used in the chapter on mental and behavioural disorders of the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (‎ICD-10)‎. Most of the terms have been newly defined for the second edition, in line with the extensive revisions incorporated in ICD-10. Each term is defined as precisely and concisely as possible. Where appropriate, the code number of the ICD-10 category in which the term appears is given as part of the entry. Alternative names, synonyms, and near-synonyms are also included. The lexicon covers four broad categories of terms. The first concerns names of diseases, syndromes and other conditions that appear as diagnoses in psychiatry. The second category includes names of symptoms or signs and other psychopathological terms used in the descriptions or definitions of psychiatric disorders. The third category includes terms for abstract constructs reflecting relationships or rules and principles used in the conceptual construction of psychiatric diagnosis and classification. The fourth category, new in this edition, includes terms originating in disciplines and fields outside psychiatry which have gained a firm position within the mental health area
