Abstract: Health laboratory services provide vital support for disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment management, screening and surveillance. It is therefore an imperative that laboratory operations adhere to best practices and quality standards to ensure generation of accurate, reliable and timely results. ISO 15189:2012 “Medical Laboratories – Requirements for quality and competence” was developed by the International Organization for Standardization to assist health laboratories in developing their quality management systems and assessing their competence. This document is an adaptation of the ISO 15189 standard to the context and realities of resource-limited countries, where the requirements of the ISO standard may be too stringent to implement. It provides a minimum set of requirements that can be readily adjusted by countries and applied to laboratories at every level of their health care system and is intended as a resource for those seeking to improve quality of laboratory results and implement quality management systems in their facilities and operations. It can also be used as a basis for the development and implementation of national guidelines for quality assurance and quality management in health laboratories, in developing national quality standards for the health laboratories
