Abstract: The Event Management System (EMS) is an online WHO application tool designed to provide timely information for event monitoring, iterative risk assessment and to support decisions about response operations during outbreaks and other acute public health events in accordance with the International Health Regulations (2005). This tool selectively captures public health events that may constitute public health risk to countries through the international spread of disease or that may require a coordinated international response. EMS is a functional tool for implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005 and WHO country offices are being urged to utilize the tool effectively for monitoring and reporting of outbreaks. This document contains a report on a hands-on training workshop on EMS held on 9 -10 May 2011 at SEARO for WHO country office staff and staff of the Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology (DSE) Unit and other technical units in SEARO. This report also includes a summary of discussions held in a back-to-back meeting of DSE focal points on 11 May 2011 to strengthen outbreak monitoring and response operations in SEA Region.
