AbstractOver 150,000 TB patients are estimated to develop multi-drugresistance every year in the South-East Asia Region. Developing thecapacity of national laboratory networks to detect drug-resistant TBthrough quality-assured culture and drug susceptibility testing andthrough deploying the newer diagnostics now available is a critical prerequisitefor managing as well as monitoring trends in drug-resistant TB. The workshop on Strengthening Laboratory Diagnosis ofMultidrug and Extensively Drug-Resistant TB was organized in order tomeet the felt need to improve the technical and managerial capacity ofsenior TB laboratory personnel. The workshop emphasized on qualityassuredmicroscopy, culture and drug susceptibility testing, as well as tocommence using newer diagnostics for the detection of drug resistanceboth for the purposes of expanding diagnosis of M/XDR-TB withincountries and for undertaking regular drug resistance surveillance tomonitor trends in TB drug resistance. The workshop was very interactive, with a mix of presentations,practical demonstrations and hands-on practice sessions. In consultationwith the facilitators, participants reviewed the current laboratorycapacity in their respective countries and identified the next steps forfollow-up at country level.
