Abstract: The workshop on Sentinel Surveillance for Drug Resistance in Leprosy was held at the Faculty of Medicine Diderot, Saint Louis Hospital, Paris, France on 26-27 October 2009. Reports on relapses from 10 countries from the African, American, Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asian and Western Pacific Regions were presented. The drug resistance surveillance work carried out by the seven reference laboratories in Brazil, France, India, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States of America were presented. Topics on molecular research, chemotherapy research, comparative genomics and phylogeography of M. leprae, drug resistance in leprosy and recent advances, quality control and the use of FTA cards for collection of skin smear samples were presented and discussed. The workshop concluded that there is further evidence of the potential threat of emergence of drug-resistance strains of M. leprae and that surveillance of drug resistance is an important activity.
