Abstract: The Regional Strategic Plan for Strengthening Health Service Management in the South-East Asia Region is the outcome of intense discussions and deliberations with Member countries at the Regional Workshop on Strengthening Management Capacity of Health Managers at Sub-national/district levels" held in Jakarta in 2007. This Regional strategic plan maps out current management gaps, such as shortage of managers, inadequate competencies, lack of a functional support system and inadequate working environment to support good management. Six strategic areas of actions, including several strategic activities have been identified. WHO's role in strengthening health service management in the Region has also been listed. Roles of national governments in implementing country activities are critical as they collectively contribute to regional actions. In this effort, the Regional Office, in collaboration with country offices, will play a facilitating and catalytic role in extending support to Member countries whenever necessary.
