Title: Review of the implementation of the Bamako Initiative

Abstract: During the thirty-seventh session of the WHO Regional Committee (1987), h"alth ministers of the countries in the African Region adoptee! a resolution (AFRlRC37/6) on the Bamako Initiative, with a view to strengthening primary health care. 2. After a decade of implementation of the Initiative, the Regional Cornmittee, at its forty-seventh session in 1997, requested that the Initiative be reviewed. 3. The WHO Regional Office for Africa, in collaboration with the Government of Mali and UNICEF, organized a meeting in Bamako, Mali, from 8 to 12 March 1999 10 review the inplementation of the Bamako Initiative in the African Region. The meeting was attended by representltives of 43 countries and a report on the deliberaiions is being published. 4. This report sets out the outcomes of the meeting as weil as a framework for the implementation of the Bamako Initiative in the future. It also defines the raIe of the Initiative in the mgoing health sector reform in the countries of the Region.
