Relevance of the Aedes Larval/House Index in predicting outbreaks of Dengue/Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever.
AbstractSince 1963, outbreaks of dengue/DHF have been recorded in India in almost all parts of the country. In all these outbreaks, the main mosquito found to be involved in transmission was Aedes aegypti. In the present study, results of investigations of different outbreaks of dengue fever, wherein both entomological and epidemiologicial aspects were fully investigated by various workers in the same locality, were taken into consideration in order to correlate teh attack rates of dengue/DHF with the A. aegypti larval/house index. This situation was compared with the Aedes larval index in relation to yellow fever transmission in Africa. The results of the retrospective dengue/DHF investigations revealed a strong relationship between the attack rate and the Aedes larval index. One factor common to all documented dengue outbreaks is that, by and large, all outbreaks are associated with a more than 20 per cent larval index. In this study, a kind of analogy was noted between the density of A. aegypti in relation to yellow fever in Africa and the density of A. aegypti in relation to various dengue/dengue haemorrhagic outbreaks in India. In both situations, a larval index of above 20 per cent of A. aegypti appears to be related to a high risk of transmission. Therefore, it is strongly felt that in urban agglomerates the A. aegypti larval/house index should be kept below 20 per cent to avoid the risk of outbreaks of dengue/dengue haemorrhagic fever in India.
