In 2011 the regional diphtheria–tetanus–pertussis (DTP3) coverage was only 75%, and WHO estimates that about 9 million children miss out on the most basic package of immunization. Recognizing this, the Sixty-fourth Session of the WHO South-East Asia Regional Committee adopted resolution SEA/RC64/R3 declaring 2012 as the Year of Intensification of Routine Immunization. This paper presents an update on the progress towards, and challenges to, polio eradication. The Region has made tremendous progress towards polio eradication in the past year. In January 2013, the South-East Asia Region marked two polio-free years – its longest polio-free period. The last wild poliovirus case in the Region was reported from India on 13 January 2011.
