Abstract

In its collaborative efforts spanning over six decades, WHO has always focused on the priority health needs of its Member States in the South-East Asia Region. The prime objectives have been to strengthen health systems, to achieve improved health outcomes and to ensure fair and equitable access to health care by all. The Report of the Regional Director on the Work of WHO the South-East Asia Region, covering the period 1 January – 31 December 2010, clearly highlights the progress made in health development and in achieving the Organization's strategic objectives. The Report which identifies various challenges and the measures adopted to address them will be found most useful by those following health developments in the South-East Asia Region.

Abstract

As the lead UN agency in international health development, WHO has been collaborating with its Member States in the South-East Asia Region to strengthen national capacity in several areas of priority interest. Accounting for nearly one fourth of the global population the Region also carries a heavy burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases. These factors are further compounded by inadequate resources and pose a unique challenge, which are being addressed by policy makers in the Region. This biennial report on the Work of WHO in the South-East Asia Region for the period 1 January 2008 - 31 December 2009, covers the major areas of WHO collaboration, highlighting the achievements, challenges and the way forward. This report will be found most useful for all those interested in health development in the Region."

Abstract

This publication is the report of the Meeting of the Senior Advisers to the Ministers of Health, held on 6 September 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand. Senior Advisers to the Ministers of Health in the SEA Region reviewed the working papers to be discussed at the Twenty-eighth Meeting of Ministers of Health to be held on 7 September 2010. The Senior Advisers Meeting made recommendations for each of the agenda items for consideration by the Twenty-eighth Meeting of Ministers of Health.
