Abstract
The role of the primary health care physician is central to the World Health Organization's global strategy for 'Health for All by the Year 2000'. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean has taken a number of initiatives in establishing strong foundations for primary health care, particularly in integrating the role of the first referral hospital and introducing basic surgery to primary health care delivery by newly qualified physicians. This practical and didactic handbook covers accidents, medical, surgical and obstetric emergencies. It provides a comprehensive but concise reference for general practitioners and primary health care physicians. Each chapter discusses the aetiology, differential diagnosis and clinical considerations of emergencies and outlines procedural steps for their management and follow-up
