Abstract: Monitoring the progress made towards achieving health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) depends on the availability of data on the associated indicators and on the quality of that data. This report provides an assessment of the current situation regarding the availability of data required to produce the health-related MDG indicators in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It also discusses common and country-specific problems of the national health information systems as related to their capacities to produce the data required for the MDG indicators. The report was prepared for and presented as a background paper at the Meeting on MDG-related and other health indicators in the Commonwealth of Independent States, Almaty, Kazakhstan, 28-30 September 2005, organized by the WHO Regional Office for Europe within the framework of the CARINFONET Project
