Abstract
Representatives of cities in five European countries (‎Ireland, Italy, Norway, Slovakia and Sweden)‎, along with staff of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, met for the first Seminar of the SAVE II project on promotion of energy-efficient personal transport in a network of European cities. SAVE II is funded by the European Commission. The project seeks, through twinning and exchanging experience, to support local governments' efforts to increase cycling and reduce car journeys. The project is consistent with the Regional Office's developing work in on transport, the environment and health, and healthy urban planning. The innovative feature of this work in relation to existing initiatives to promote cycling is its emphasis on health concerns. The Seminar was held at the end of phase I of the project. The programme included discussion of the current situation in each participating city, the products developed during phase I, and the arrangements for exchanges of experience between twinned cities during phase II
