Authors: World Health Organization. Regional Office for Europe
Issue Date: 1998

Language: English
Abstract: The management of health care wastes within hospitals is the subject of considerable concern to both public health and infection control specialists. The ever-present risk of nosocomial infection of patients and medical staff within health care institutions requires careful attention in all health care activities. The proper collection, separation, transport and disposal of health care wastes within hospitals is no exception. This report has been prepared in the form of training notes to be used in conjunction with a health care waste video prepared by the WHO Nancy Project Office for use in central and eastern Europe. The training notes are designed to be given to each participant in short training exercises as a permanent reminder of the key points to ensure safe health care waste management in hospital medical departments and the auxiliary services in hospitals. Information is provided on the separation, identification, handling, treatment and disposal of wastes and the need for proper management planning and regular record-keeping is emphasized, so that information on the movement of wastes can be used to ensure that they are treated and disposed of regularly and efficiently
