Surveillance guidelines for measles and congenital rubella infection in the European Region of WHO

View/ Open
Abstract
Measles and rubella remain important causes of vaccine-preventable disease and death in the European Region of WHO. The Strategic Plan for Measles and Congenital Rubella Infection in the European Region of WHO identifies key strategies to meet the targets for interrupting indigenous measles transmission and preventing congenital rubella infection (<1 case of congenital rubella syndrome per 100 000 live births) by 2010; strengthening surveillance systems by vigorous case investigation and laboratory confirmation is one of these key strategies. Surveillance indicators identified in these surveillance guidelines will be critical for assessing whether Member States have achieved the disease targets. The Surveillance Guidelines for Measles and Congenital Rubella Infection are intended to provide technical advice on the design and implementation of surveillance programmes for these diseasesCitation

Regional Office for Europe (EUR/05/5051333, 2005)The Strategic plan for measles and congenital rubella infection in the WHO European Region, was developed and implemented in 2002 and includes two objectives for 2010: interruption of indigenous measles transmission and the prevention of congenital rubella infection (CRI; less than one case of congenital rubella syndrome [CRS] per 100 000 live births). It has been recommended that the plan be revised to include the objective of measles and rubella elimination by 2010 along with CRI prevention. Surveillance Guidelines for Measles, Rubella and Congenital Rubella Syndrome in the WHO European Region
WHO Regional Office for Europe (2012)The WHO Regional Committee for Europe adopted the goal of eliminating indigenous measles transmission in 1998. In 2005, the Regional Committee expanded this commitment to include rubella and set a date for the elimination of both diseases by 2010. Although Member States did make progress, through the implementation of a strategic plan, the goal was not achieved. The WHO Regional Committee for Europe acknowledged at its sixtieth session (2010) that the regional goal of eliminating measles and rubella is achievable, and set a new target date of ... -
