Meeting on natural and intentional epidemic risks in the European Region : strengthening alert mechanisms : report on a WHO meeting, Lyon, France 6-8 February 2002
AbstractRecent events have made it clear that the international community must address the intentional release of biological agents as a public health priority. A recent review of national preparedness plans in the Member States of the WHO European Region has pointed out the need for strengthening national and international capacities for early detection and response to such threats. The purpose of the meeting was (a) to review the capacity of public health surveillance systems to detect and respond to natural and deliberately caused epidemics; (b) to identify needs and agree on mechanisms for strengthening such capacity; and (c) to identify and agree on how national early warning systems can contribute to regional and global networking initiatives. Representatives of 28 Member States of the Region attended the meeting and agreed on 22 recommendations in the areas of early warning systems, international epidemiology networking, strengthening of national surveillance capacity, laboratory and information technology, and human resources development
