Addressing the social determinants of health: the urban dimension and the role of local government
( 2012 )
Abstract

This report summarizes the evidence on the social determinants of health and the built environment with special reference to the role of local government across countries in the WHO European Region. It draws on the findings of the global Commission on Social Determinants of Health and the European review of social determinants of health and the health divide. Through its leadership, local government has a significant role to play in working across sectors and with civil society partners to support and accelerate action to address the social determinants of health and the causes of health inequalities. The evidence presented here provides the background to the complementary report Healthy cities tackle the social determinants of inequities in health: a framework for action.

City health profiles : a review of progress
World Health Organization. Regional Office for Europe; WHO Healthy Cities Project ( 1998 )
Abstract

City health profiles - a review of progress overviews health profiles by reviewing the literature, looking at some common queries about the process of producing profiles and summarizing the review of the profiles produced by cities participating in the WHO Healthy Cities project. The book explores the different processes though which profiles can describe and address inequity at a local level with examples. A chapter reviews how information on lifestyles can be included in health profiles. The last chapter examines community health profiles and what they mean. It also includes examples of some methods used to develop them and how these profiles were used

City survey : analysis and results
World Health Organization. Regional Office for Europe ( 2002 )
Abstract

The WHO Centre for urban health launched the "In Tandem" project (Promotion of Energy Efficient Personal Transport in a Network of European Cities), in co-operation with 8 European Cities. The overall aim of this project is to promote cycling in cities. It is partially funded by the Commission of the European Union DGTREN, Energy and Transport, under its SAVE programme to promote energy efficiency. "In Tandem" was undertaken as a response to the growing evidence that present urban mobility policies and patterns have important health effects through accidents, emissions of pollutants and noise, reduced opportunities for physical exercise, and their contribution to urban inequalities. The aim of the survey was to determine the level of cycling policy development and implementation in the eight participating cities. It builds on the results of a Literature review, and provides further information on factors leading to pro-cycling activities, and barriers to change in local authorities
