Abstract

Acrylamide, which is known to produce neurotoxic effects in man and many experimental animals, is a white, odourless, crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water. Commercially produced since 1954, acrylamide and its derivatives are primarily used in the production of polymers and copolymers having a large market as flocculating agents in the treatment of sewage, wastewater, and drinking water. The ingestion of contaminated drinking water can pose an important health risk for man. This document utilizes well over 200 references to clarify current knowledge on the health consequences of exposure to acrylamide. Concern over neurotoxic effects is reflected in a detailed section in which conclusions are drawn on the basis of considerable animal research

Abstract

An expert assessment of the effects on human health and the environment posed by ammonia. Prepared by a 14-member task group, the book bases its evaluations on more than 600 published reports of epidemiological, laboratory, and clinical investigations, including controlled studies in man. The most extensive sections of the book are devoted to the effects of ammonia in the aquatic and terrestrial environments where, as a result of urbanization, industry, and farming, significant toxic effects of ammonia may arise. Readers will find especially detailed assessments of the effects on aquatic animals as well as effects on cattle, swine, and poultry resulting from continuous exposure under confined housing conditions. Information on the kinetics and metabolism of ammonia and on its effects on experimental animals and in vitro systems is also presented

Butanols - four isomers : 1-butanol, 2-butanol, tert-butanol, isobutanol / published under the joint sponsorship of the United Nations Environment Programme, the International Labour Organization, and the World Health Organization
International Programme on Chemical Safety; United Nations Environment Programme; International Labour Organization; World Health Organization ( 1987 )
Abstract

Presents individual monographs on the risks to health and the environment associated with 1-butanol, 2-butanol, tert-butanol, and isobutanol. These butanol isomers, which occur naturally as products of fermentation, are also synthesized from petrochemicals and widely used as solvents and intermediates in chemical industries. Human exposure to high concentrations is primarily occupational, while exposure to low concentrations is mainly through foods in which the isomers occur either naturally or as flavouring agents. Although the butanol isomers can be classified as slightly or practically nontoxic, all isomers, in large amounts, have the ability to induce signs of alcoholic intoxication in both animals and man. The most extensive section of each monograph covers data on biological effects observed in experimental animals, in in vitro test systems, and in cases of accidental occupational exposure in man. Particular attention is given to studies useful in assessing effects on the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract of workers exposed to these chemicals
