WHO mortality data and statistics
About the data and statistics
WHO obtains data on deaths by age, sex and cause of death, as reported annually by Member States from their civil registration systems, and compiles them in the WHO Mortality Database.
Based on country-reported data, and using additional data sources such as population censuses and household surveys, WHO and its partners regularly estimate key mortality statistics, in order to improve data comparability across countries and years. These estimates are not always the same as official national estimates produced using alternative methods, nor necessarily endorsed by specific Member States.
