Evaluations

Evaluation year: 2000

ADI:
0-5 mg/kg bw (1982)

Comments:
At the fifty-fifth meeting (2000), the 1982 ADI of 0-5 mg/kg bw for carmines, as ammonium carmine or the equivalent of calcium, potassium and sodium salts, was not reconsidered and was maintained.
Allergenicity:
TRS 999-JECFA 55/10; FAS 46-JECFA 55/9. The Committee concluded that cochineal extract, carmines, and possibly carminic acid in foods and beverages may provoke allergic reactions in some individuals.
