African Union Heads of State Summit 2013

The theme of the Africa Union's 2013 Summit is “Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance”. H.E. Dr. Nkoszana Dlamini-Zuma will preside as the newly elected and first female Chairperson of the AU Commission. Ahead of the Summit, African health ministers will come together on child survival at a meeting hosted by the Government of Ethiopia. During the Summit, the AU Commission, Africa Development Bank, UNFPA and other partners are organizing a Special Event on The Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) and its progress in advancing women’s and children’s health in Africa. The AU Member States will also share good practices and opportunities to further advance maternal health and reduce maternal and child mortality in Africa. There will also be a dialogue session held during the Summit by the YWCA in partnership with UN Women, UNFPA, IPPF, ActionAid, AIDS in Action and others, which will bring 40 young women to present an intergenerational perspective to the meeting as well as highlight issues of health and violence against women.
