This report covers a challenging 12 months for WHO's Western Pacific Region. During the period there were serious outbreaks of a previously unknown disease, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), in several Member States. The report describes WHO's response to the outbreak, as well as its work to combat other communicable diseases in the Region. The report details new initiatives to improve access to safe and affordable medicines, strengthen training of health workers and implement national health accounts, among others.
