| Summary |
Country health information systems provides an overview of the status of
health information systems (HIS) in low- and middle-income countries. It uses
various components of the Health Metrics Network/WHO HIS Framework to
describe the general status of HIS, data sources, monitoring of the health
system as well as disease-specifi c practices.
The review shows that while there has been progress in several HIS areas there
are also major persistent gaps. In particular, the imbalance between increasing
demands for reporting against specific indicators and the actual efforts to
strengthen country health information systems and their core data sources,
remains a major challenge in many countries.
The findings underscore recommendations made by the heads of eight global
health agencies (the H8) and the Global Health Information Forum (GHIF) in
2010: Countries must urgently develop comprehensive health information
systems supported by a sound policy, legal and institutional environment. |
